TEN

Ella pulled into Audra's house. They were going to go out to eat somewhere. Ella was grateful because she could use someone to talk to right about now. She left Dobry with a sitter so she didn't have to watch what she said in front of Dobry. Audra came out of the house. Ella smiled as she crossed in front of the car to get into the passenger side.

"Hey," Audra smiled as she plopped down.

"Hey, ready?"

"Let's do it!"

Ella put the car in reverse and headed out of the small neighborhood.

"Where are we going?"

"Uh, McAllister's?'

"Sounds good to me."

Ella already knew what she was going to order. She always got the same thing every time. Hell, she could be a regular. Some of the staff memorized her order. She had gone in there almost every Friday since July. She just loved the atmosphere. It wasn't far from Audra's house either. So getting there was simple and fast. When they pulled into the parking lot, they lucked out with a front row spot during the lunch hour. They would be competing with the high school students who were out for lunch, but she didn't mind. It meant the wait staff would stop by as they were needed.

They went inside and ordered. They found a booth in the back corner of the restaurant. It seemed quieter back there. As they sat down, she felt the air shift between them. She could tell Audra was preparing herself for a heavy conversation. Ella took a sip of her half and half tea. They went a little more on the sweet side today apparently.

"Have you heard from him?" Audra asked. Ella knew exactly who 'him' was.

"No, no one has since he left the hospital."

"What about Paxton?"

"Nope, she won't return my calls either. She's even ignoring Jack."

"Do you really blame her?"

"Not really. I probably would if I were in her shoes. I know she is out of the hospital, but no one will say anything about if she is okay or not."

"She probably is since she was released. She may just want to some space. I mean, she's pregnant and she just found out her fiancé had an affair with her best friend."

"You make it sound like we are horrible people."

"Both of them probably think you are."

Ella knew Audra wasn't trying to be mean, just truthful. As much as it hurt, she had to agree with her sister.

"How's Dobry doing?"

"She's not asking for him as much. When she does, it's a complete meltdown. She'll see a truck on TV and point to it saying 'Daddy!'."

"That's heartbreaking."

"She doesn't understand."

Audra nodded. Their food came and they thanked the girl who dropped it off. They both took their first bites.

"So what are you going to do?" Audra asked before she took a bit of her wrap.

Ella finished chewing, "I have no idea. I'm not letting Jack in, but I can't keep him away from Dobry. He wants to be in Dobry's life."

"You don't want him to be?"

"She needs her father, but to her, that's Duke.
